Things to look for to ensure a safe, healthy pedicure and manicure
It has become a standard practice to have someone else paint your fingers and toes and is certainly a wonderful, fun way to spend time with friends or your daughter, but are we paying attention to the cleanliness of the business performing the service? And would we really know if it was sufficient?
One of the major business rules of Verde is to provide a service that I myself would want or allow my daughter to receive. So when we decided to introduce manicures and pedicures at both locations, I began doing research to provide the best products with the best tools and to train my staff to be above and beyond the usual requirements.
Verde is also offering our Manicures and Pedicures using the best products. Eminence Organic Skincare is used for our scrubs, masks, and cleansers. We use Mavala Nail Care and Zoya Nail polishes for nails.
Two common practices warrant particular mention:
At Verde, we use truly pipeless pedicure chairs (the ones at our Riggs Location are fully reclining… I know, wake me when you’re done…) meaning that there is no whirlpool or circulating water. We fill the basin with warm water from our sink and bring it to the chairs where they are heated and vibrate from underneath. That means there are no jets. We use disposable liners with each service and carefully disinfect all tools and implements according to Arizona State Board regulations.
Why is this important? Any time you have jets, this is where bacteria collects from the previous service and is pushed back into your foot bath. The EPA requires pedicure chair basins to be disinfected for 10 minutes after each service with a hospital grade disinfectant. Many businesses are changing to disposable liners because, let’s face it, this just isn’t being done.
At night, it is required to remove the filter screen, inlet jets, and all other removable parts and clean out any debris trapped behind or in them and scrub, rinse, and again disinfect the entire system for 10 minutes – “Turn the unit on and circulate the system with the liquid for 10 minutes, or the label-indicated time if different. (The whirlpool mechanism of the tub must be operating for the entire disinfection period so the piping and internal components that contain hidden bacteria are disinfected.)”
Now let’s discuss gel nails. Gel nails have become increasingly popular due to their longevity and, I will admit, as a hairstylist with her hands continually in water, this is appealing. However, as with most things in life, the easy road is usually not the best one.
If UV light is used to harden the product onto the nail bed, this is actually UVA light which, as we know, causes aging effects and danger to the human body. SPF 15, anyone? Although UVA rays do not burn the skin like UVB rays, they do penetrate the skin damaging DNA and collagen, which can lead to premature aging and increase skin cancer risk. We use an LED lamp with no secondary UV attached at all.
Your exposure may be brief, but it is intense and most customers receive manicures many times over a lifetime and this is sure to add up.
Read more about this from the American Academy of Dermatology’s article, “Gel manicures: The good, the bad and the UV”
So what about those who don’t use a lamp, but simply “dip” their nails in a powder? Make sure your nail products do not contain these “Big 3” – DBP, Tuluene and Formaldehyde.
DBP or ‘dibutyl phthalate’ is a plasticizer that makes nail polish flexible.
Toluene is a solvent used to harden paint onto cars and Formaldehyde helps harden nails.
According to the Skin Deep database, each of these ranks a high hazard score of 10, with studies linking them to kidney damage, cancer, and reproductive harm just to name a few concerns.
In following posts, I want to discuss what we are doing at Verde to help with the health of the nail and to keep hands from aging. What is it we always hear about how to tell the age of a woman? By looking at her hands. How about if we work on keeping our skin and nails young and beautiful rather than being concerned with our polish lasting for a month? Relax, enjoy the calm, let us pamper you and your friends and family. My daughter and I may have already beaten you to it.
